Survey suggests tourism industry recovery by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The European Commission has said that tourism is on track for a strong season in 2011, with a survey suggesting that the industry has recovered from the economic crisis.
More than 30,000 citizens in the EU and other European countries were polled and 68% revealed that they travelled for private reasons in 2010, compared to 65% the previous year.
The Eurobarometer poll revealed that 58% of holidaymakers are still inclined to visit traditional tourist hotspots, while 28% are more interested in discovering emerging destinations.
Italy topped the list of most frequently mentioned planned holiday destinations for 2011, followed by Spain and France.
Nearly a third (32%) of respondents cited "local attractiveness" as their main consideration when planning their breaks, followed by cultural heritage (27%) and entertainment (14%).
European Commission vice-president Antonio Tajani said: "The fact that 58% of EU residents are opting to enjoy their holidays in Europe highlights that, generally, the tourism industry is on its way to recovery and becoming a growth industry once again."
