South Africa voted best luxury travel destination by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Readers of Ultratravel, the Daily Telegraph"s luxury travel magazine, have voted South Africa the best holiday destination for 2011.

The country picked up the Ultra award ahead of the four runners-up - Dubai, the Maldives, Australia and Italy.

In response to the vote, Telegraph travel writer Lisa Grainger noted that, while South Africa is an 11-hour flight away from the UK and not as cheap as it once was, its "breathtaking" and unspoilt landscapes continue to win over visitors.

She pointed out that travellers can see wildlife along the coast or in the famous game reserves, or explore areas such as the winelands in the south and the deserts bordering Namibia.

Other winners of Ultra awards included Emirates, which was named the best airline worldwide ahead of British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Virgin Atlantic.

Hotel de Crillon in Paris was voted the best city hotel by readers of Ultratravel, with Claridge"s and the Savoy in London among the runners-up.
