Special Holidays No Longer A Luxury
Special holidays "no longer a luxury" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Many Britons now consider memorable holidays an "essential part of life" rather than a luxury, according to Simon Calder, travel editor for the Independent and adviser to Visa Europe.
He was speaking after the company released the third annual Visa Europe Travel Report, which revealed that UK consumers spent more than £9.8bn abroad last year - 18% more than in 2009.
Accommodation is the largest cost for people heading abroad, with £1.3bn spent on hotels and other hospitality options last year.
Travellers also seem determined to enjoy themselves on their trips, spending £693m on activities and excursions.
Two in five (39%) people surveyed by Visa Europe said they are able to switch off from everyday concerns during their holidays.
Tony Gibbons, head of debit for the company, said many people are now eager to protect their foreign breaks, despite financial challenges.
Mr Calder said: "Despite economic uncertainties at home over jobs and prices, two out of five Brits say they are determined to visit a more expensive destination this summer.
"A memorable holiday is no longer a luxury - it"s an essential part of life."
