Bookings surge for short haul holidays by Cheap Flights Booker UK

The group cited figures from the market research company GfK-Ascent MI, which show that holidays to Spain are up 11% this year, while holidays to Portugal are up 8%.

Overall short haul bookings are up by 9% for the summer 2011 season compared to last summer.

ABTA said there are some great deals to be found in Tunisia and Egypt at the moment.

"There are still bargains to be had in Turkey, which has seen spectacular growth in recent years," it added.

GfK-Ascent MI"s figures also showed that luxury travel is making a comeback following the recession, with more tourists booking spa breaks and top hotels.

Furthermore, adventure holidays are proving increasingly poplar, while travellers are paying more attention to responsible tourism by seeking out environmental and socially responsible providers.
