European airports see increase in passenger traffic by Cheap Flights Booker UK
European airports experienced a rise in passenger traffic last year, according to new figures from trade body ACI Europe.
The data shows that overall passenger numbers were up 5.4% in May 2010 compared to May 2009.
Between January and May, traffic was up 1.5% compared to the corresponding period a year earlier.
Airports were assigned to four groups, with group one hubs representing the largest hubs and group four representing the smallest.
Those in the fourth group, which included Brindisi, Vilnius and Charleroi, saw the biggest rise in passenger numbers at 7%.
Olivier Jankovec, director general of ACI Europe, said: "These latest traffic figures are a welcome piece of good news, and the summer months should hopefully continue this positive trend."
However, he pointed out that traffic still remains more then 10% below May 2008 levels, which means there is still a lot of ground to make up following the global recession.
