New research carried out by the country"s official tourist board Failte Ireland found that a majority of visitors to the Emerald Isle believe Irish produce - most notably its meat and dairy - to be world-class.

Additionally, visitors were found to be particularly keen to sample local dishes while holidaying in Ireland.

However, the study also revealed that, despite believing Irish ingredients to be "purer, fresher and more wholesome" than those of other nations, some visitors nevertheless think the final dishes on offer more could be a bit more "sophisticated".

As such, a new National Traineeship in Professional Cookery scheme has been launched across the country, while establishments are also being encouraged to serve up their visitors a treat.

"Every pub, restaurant and hotel should make the effort to have at least one local dish on their menu, showcasing what"s produced nearby, be it farmhouse cheese, fish or lamb, because tourists really respond to that "place on a plate"" idea," said Tony Lenehan of Failte Ireland.
