European nations "top choice for Brits marrying abroad" by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Popular holiday countries in Europe are the leading options for British couples planning to get married overseas, according to a new survey.

Weddings Abroad and Honeymoons, a guide that is published biannually and available through retailers such as WHSmith, asked 1,600 future brides and grooms about the destinations they were looking at for their nuptial ceremonies and found that 12% were considering Cyprus.

A further 11% revealed that they were thinking about having their big day in Italy and 7% were contemplating Greece.

Discussing the appeal of countries such as these, Ursula Barzey, marketing director for Weddings Abroad and Honeymoons, said they are "picturesque, relatively easy to get to and most often have better weather than you would get in the UK".

She added: "Whereas a wedding in the UK will cost on average around £20,000, a wedding at one of these destinations will be around £6,500, so quite a saving for a new couple starting out."

The US and South Africa also emerged as popular options for engaged couples considering an overseas wedding, while Spain, Jamaica, France, Barbados and St Lucia completed the top ten.
