Foreign Office launches emergency text service for travellers by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The Foreign Office has introduced a trial of a text message service that will be used to contact travellers in countries where there has been a crisis, such as a natural disaster or civil unrest.
Working with Vodafone UK, the government agency will send emergency information and advice to all of the company"s subscribers as well as customers of any provider using the Vodafone network.
The service is being introduced for a 12-month trial period and will be free to all of the participating firms" customers.
Foreign Office minister Jeremy Browne said recent crises in countries such as Libya and Japan have highlighted the importance of delivering live travel safety messages to as many people as possible.
He added: "The pilot is part of the Foreign Office"s commitment to improve consular services. We will soon have the ability to send text messages to all affected British nationals registered on our crisis database.
"As well as this, we"re also exploring delivering important information through a range of mobile and online tools, including smartphone apps, a travel advice site for mobile phones and making effective use of social media and digital tools."
If the trial is successful, the text messaging service could be rolled out to other mobile network operators and providers.
