According to research by M&S Money, 40% of Britons don"t bother to devise a budget before taking a summer trip, with a quarter of this group saying they shouldn"t have to because a holiday is their one luxury for the year.

Another 14% said they don"t see the point in setting spending plans as they never stick to them, while one in ten highlighted the problem of not knowing how much everyday items will cost in their destination.

The M&S Money research also found that common strategies for trying to cut back on breaks include spending less money on inflight and airport shopping, opting for self-catering accommodation and staying in all-inclusive resorts.

James Yerkess, head of travel money for the company, said: "The summer holiday is the one time of the year when people really relax and enjoy themselves so it"s easy to get carried away and overspend, but this can easily be avoided by putting together a simple budget for your holiday essentials and then you"ll know how much you"ve get left to splurge on those holiday luxuries."
