United Continental Holdings has launched an initiative to convert to paperless flight decks using iPads.
Some 11,000 of the handheld devices have been delivered to Continental and United Airlines pilots, featuring an application providing aeronautical navigation charts.
The plan is expected to provide numerous environmental benefits by saving 16 million sheets of paper and 326,000 gallons of jet fuel every year.
Furthermore, iPads are set to improve efficiency and safety by making it easier for pilots to access reference material and other information.
Captain Fred Abbott, United"s senior vice president of flight operations, said: "The paperless flight deck represents the next generation of flying.
"The introduction of iPads ensures our pilots have essential and real-time information at their fingertips at all times throughout the flight."
British Airways recently announced that it was equipping its cabin crew with the devices to make it easier for staff to check timetables, safety manuals, customer preferences and other details.
