Vilnius Launches Electric Bike Hire Scheme
Vilnius launches electric bike hire scheme by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Travellers planning city breaks in Vilnius are being offered a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the Lithuanian capital following the launch of an electric bicycle hire scheme.
The initiative, which is thought to be the first of its kind in a European city, uses black bikes with bright orange stripes that are available to rent from four tourist information centres in the downtown and old town areas.
Hire costs €3 (£2.60) for the first hour, with increasing hourly costs for longer rides, and a refundable €145 deposit is required by credit card.
The scheme was launched by Vilnius mayor Arturas Zuokas, who described it as "good for the people of Vilnius … good for our visitors and … good for the city".
He added: "I"m pleased that Vilnius has taken the lead in providing a new mode of quality public transportation which addresses urban congestion issues that all cities face. I hope that other cities will follow our lead."
Mayor Zuokas recently caused a stir when he took to the streets of the city to highlight parking violations by driving over an illegally parked car with a tank.
