Britain Set For Golden Period For Sports Tourism

Britain set for "golden period" for sports tourism by Cheap Flights Booker UK

VisitBritain has highlighted the potential of some of the major sporting events set to take place in the UK over the coming years, looking forward to what it describes as a "golden period" for sports tourism.

The tourism agency recently joined former England rugby internationals Lawrence Dallaglio, Will Greenwood and Martin Corry at a gala event in Auckland to mark the beginning of the journey to the 2015 Rugby World Cup (RWC) in England and Wales.

A giant inflatable rugby ball, specially lit to appear as the cross of St George, provided the setting for the event.

The RWC is now the third largest sporting event in the world after the Olympic Games - which will be held in London in 2012 - and the Fifa World Cup.

Sports fans will also be heading to the UK for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

VisitBritain marketing director Laurence Bresh said: "With London 2012, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and the Rugby World Cup in 2015, we have the perfect opportunity to highlight every region across the UK and build on the legacy of what will be a golden period for sports tourism in Britain."

Rugby fans will soon be booking hotels in Paris, Rome, Edinburgh, Dublin, Cardiff and London ahead of the 2012 Six Nations series.
