Heathrow reveals progress of winter resilience programme by Cheap Flights Booker UK

BAA has published an update on its winter resilience programme at London Heathrow, providing details of changes and measures being introduced to prepare for the possibility of extreme weather this winter.

The airport operator revealed that the number of vehicles available for snow clearance has been increased threefold from December 2010 to 185, while the number of staff on hand for the same purpose will rise from 117 to 468 per shift.

Should Heathrow be affected by delays or disruptions, passengers waiting to catch flights will be helped by up to 950 non-operational staff being deployed to terminals in a new "reservist" role.

BAA has also reached an agreement with airlines, National Air Traffic Services and the company responsible for allocating slots at the airport regarding a new process for managing necessary cancellations.

This should mean that passengers receive more timely and accurate information about the status of their flight.

The progress update was released six months after the publication of a report following an enquiry chaired by Professor David Begg into how BAA could increase Heathrow"s resilience to weather-related disruption.

Normand Bolvin, the airport"s chief operating officer, said much progress has been made but stressed that there is still more to do.

He added: "There will be lots of attention on Heathrow the next time it snows heavily. We won"t be perfect but we will be better and we will improve each time we practice our new response plans."
