Tourism Australia opens Great Barrier Reef"s first polling booth by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Travellers and Australians are being invited to visit the Great Barrier Reef"s first ever polling booth to cast their vote for the location in the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign.

Tourism Australia opened the pop-up booth on the sandbank island of Upolu Cay, 30km north-east of Cairns.

Members of the public can visit the location to show their support for either the Great Barrier Reef or Uluru in the survey to find the world"s most wondrous natural phenomena.

One voter, snorkeller Laura Turner from Queensland, said it was "very surreal" to see a polling booth in the middle of the ocean, miles away from any signs of modern civilisation.

"After seeing how incredible the Great Barrier Reef is with my own eyes, the booth gave me the ideal opportunity to place my vote right there and then," she added.

The Australian sites face competition from destinations like Milford Sound in New Zealand, Angel Falls in Venezuela and Ireland"s Cliffs of Moher for a place on the final list of natural wonders.
