Abta: Public says "enough is enough" over flight taxes by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Consumers have told the government "enough is enough" over air passenger duty (APD), according to Abta.
The travel industry association carried out a survey which found that nearly seven out of ten (69%) people think they are already paying too much tax to catch flights from the UK.
Rising duties have led to 65% of travellers paying close attention to levels of taxation on their air fares, up from 58% last year.
Abta accused the government of using APD as a tool to raise revenue and called for the plans for another increase in April 2012 to be abandoned.
Chief executive Mark Tanzer said successive governments have relied on public ignorance about the issue to increase the tax to the highest levels in the world.
"Our research shows that the public is wising up to this and is saying enough is enough, no more increases," he added.
The industry association"s Fair Tax on Flying campaign has received support from companies such as Virgin Atlantic, which urged the chancellor of the exchequer to take the industry"s advice and not increase the already "ridiculously high" duty.
