BA prepares for arrival of Airbus A380 at Heathrow by Cheap Flights Booker UK
British Airways has completed the latest phase of a redevelopment project at its engineering base at London Heathrow in preparation for the arrival of a new fleet of Airbus A380s in 2013.
The carrier"s aircraft hangars are large enough to accommodate the Boeing 747 but are being adjusted in order to house the A380 and its larger tailfin.
One of the new features of the structures is a 24-tonne roof "eyebrow" that was lifted into place as workers raised the height of the entrance to one of the buildings.
The hangars were built in the early 1950s and gained listed status from English Heritage in 1995.
Vance Williamson, head of property services for British Airways, said: "This is an important step in converting our hangars ready for our new aircraft arriving in 2013. It could also allow British Airways to provide maintenance solutions to other A380 customers at Heathrow."
He went on to reveal that the modifications are part of a wider plan designed to ensure that the airline"s Heathrow engineering base remains a "world-class" maintenance facility able to accommodate the latest aircraft.
