The study highlighted the growing popularity of luxury holidays with an authentic and ethical side.

Euromonitor International predicted that the trend will see more retailers and operators offering encounters with local figures such as craftsmen, artists and musicians.

The report identified eight emerging concepts and developments in the travel industry, including "mystery trips" in the Americas, which see key holiday elements such as the destination, hotel name and itinerary kept from customers until the last minute.

Travel companies have also been making greater use of competitions, challenges and games to boost brand awareness, an approach that Euromonitor International dubbed "gamification".

Caroline Bremner, the organisation"s head of travel and tourism research, said: "Travellers are seeking out fun, adventurous trips as seen by the popularity of mystery tours in the Americas, a new rent-a-garden concept in the UK and increased "gamification" of travel."
