Travellers "still using mobiles despite high charges" by Cheap Flights Booker UK

High roaming charges and the risk of huge bills do not appear to be deterring British travellers from using their mobile phone abroad, according to a World Travel Market (WTM) industry report.

More than 1,000 people were surveyed, all of whom had taken a holiday of at least seven days in 2011, and 48% said they continued to use their phones while overseas.

Highlighting the costs that customers can incur, the report gave the example of Robin Baynes, a 30-year-old British holidaymaker who recently received a bill of more than £4,100 after using his mobile on a trip to America.

WTM chairman Fiona Jeffery said the survey results indicate how important smartphones and other handheld devices have become to many people.

"People used to go on holiday to get away from their everyday lives and recharge their batteries, but mobile internet access means we now feel we have to be connected 24 hours a day," she added.

Foreign networks implement roaming charges when they carry calls and messages to the phones of people who are outside the range of their domestic provider.
