Tunisian Culture Key To Tourism Recovery

Tunisian culture "key to tourism recovery" by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Tunisia"s national tourism agency has highlighted the importance of culture as a driver of the country"s travel industry.

Speaking at World Travel Market in 2011, commerce and tourism minister Mehdi Houas outlined the nation"s plans to extend its appeal and change the common perception that it is simply a sun and sea destination.

Industry authorities hope to highlight Tunisia"s 3,000 years of culture and traditions, as well as its landscapes and natural attractions.

Mr Houas noted that the atmosphere in the country has changed since the revolution that removed longtime president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali from power earlier this year.

"Visitors can now meet the real people, speak to them freely and experience the culture first hand," he explained.

"This is a great opportunity for tourism; Tunisia still has a lot of potential to attract many new visitors."

The minister also highlighted the important part that UK travellers are playing in the recovery, with Britons returning to the destination quicker than any other nationality after the revolution.

Last year, Tunisia welcomed more than 353,200 British tourists, marking an increase of 28% from 2009.
