4.25m set to head overseas during Christmas rush by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Some 4.25m Britons are expected to set off on trips overseas during the Christmas and new year period from 16 December to 3 January, according to Abta.
The travel industry association revealed that the projected figure marks an increase from the almost 4m people who took breaks last year.
Ski resorts in France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy have all been selling well despite a relatively dry start to the winter season in Europe, while trips to Lapland have been proving popular among families going to see Father Christmas and the Northern Lights.
For those searching for sun, the Canary Islands, Cuba and Mexico are among the most popular options, according to Abta, while Paris, Reykjavik, Rome, Dublin and New York lead the way for New Year"s Eve city breaks.
Some 1.7m people are expected to catch flights from London Heathrow during the festive season and 22 and 23 December have been singled out as the peak days for travel.
Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer said he was "delighted" that so many Brits will be treating themselves to a getaway this Christmas.
"With all the doom and gloom of the economy it looks like people are keen to escape for a break, whether they are visiting friends and family or looking to enjoy winter sun or guaranteed snow," he added.
