Govt Criticised For Failing To Reform APD
Govt criticised for failing to reform APD by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The travel industry has criticised the government for failing to reform air passenger duty (APD), despite a lengthy consultation on the flight tax.
Abta, the industry association, has been calling on the Treasury to abandon its planned increases in the duty, change the banding structure and reduce tax on premium economy seats.
It has also urged the government to make short-haul flights from Northern Ireland exempt from APD.
Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta, described the Treasury"s decision to reject all "common sense recommendations" and ignore feedback from the industry as "extremely disappointing".
"The government has missed an opportunity to make this tax fairer and instead has increased the burden on British businesses, passengers and popular destinations," he added.
A group of carriers including Virgin Atlantic, easyJet and International Airlines Group - the holding company of British Airways and Iberia - also criticised the decision to leave the APD system unchanged and described the recent consultation on the issue as "a sham".
