Hong Kong airport begins expansion to handle rising traffic by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Hong Kong International airport (HKIA) has embarked on a major expansion in order to deal with rising passenger traffic.
A trend of steady growth continued in November, with some 4.3m people passing through the base, 4.7% more than in the same month last year.
Aircraft movements increased by 4.2% year-on-year to nearly 27,900 last month.
During the first 11 months of 2011, the number of travellers recorded at HKIA exceeded 49m, marking an increase of 5.7% from the same period in 2010.
Commenting on the figures, Stanley Hui Hon-chung, chief executive of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said: "The growth momentum in passenger traffic underlines the need to develop and enhance our facilities."
The recently launched Midfield development will see an extra 20 aircraft stands made available at HKIA, enabling the airport to handle an additional 10m passengers every year.
Phase one of the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015.
Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic and Emirates are among the major carriers currently offering flights to Hong Kong.
