More than 20m people set to take cruises in 2012 by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The number of cruise passengers worldwide is expected to reach a record high of 20.3m next year, according to Cruise Market Watch, a provider of analytics on the industry.
If the projected figure proves accurate, it would represent growth of 5.6% on 2011"s figures.
The capacity of the cruise industry will be boosted next year by the launch of several new ships, including the Carnival Breeze and MSC Divina, both of which can carry more than 3,000 passengers, and the 2,500-berth Disney Fantasy.
Regarding the most popular destinations for holidays at sea, Cruise Market Watch"s 2012 Port Pulse rankings identified Nassau in the Bahamas as the top port of call and Miami, Florida as the leading embarkation point.
While regions such as Asia are growing as source markets for the cruise industry, North America and Europe still account for 86% of passengers worldwide.
Spending by guests and crew is expected to rise to $15.5bn (£9.85bn) next year.
