WTTC calls for sustainable tourism policies by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has issued a statement at the International Climate Change talks in Durban that urges governments around the world to develop new policies regarding the environment.
One of the council"s main aims is to help the travel industry grow in a sustainable way, allowing it to continue to provide new jobs and support economies, regardless of whether an agreement is reached during the negotiations in South Africa.
The WTTC described the continued growth of tourism as "critical" to the economic and social wellbeing of millions of people and pointed out that the sector generates more than 9% of global GDP and accounts for some 260m jobs worldwide.
David Scowsill, the council"s president and chief executive officer, stressed that everyone has a part to play in combating climate change and underlined the industry"s commitment to working in partnership with governments.
"Together, we can achieve a low-carbon, climate-resilient world economy," he added.
Travel and tourism leaders have already committed to halve carbon emissions by 2035 on 2005 levels, a pledge detailed in a WTTC report published in 2009.
