Etihad sets new passenger record in 2011 by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Etihad Airways set a new passenger record in 2011, with 8.29m people catching flights with the Abu Dhabi-based carrier.
Nearly 1.2m more travellers were transported across the airline"s network last year than in 2010, marking an increase of 17% on the previous year"s performance.
James Hogan, Etihad"s president and chief executive officer, noted that the record was achieved during times of economic difficulties and high oil prices, making it a testament to the company"s emergence as a "formidable force" in international aviation.
"It also reflects our commitment to sensible, strategic expansion, which is why we launched eight new routes last year," he added.
The carrier launched flights to Shanghai, Bangalore, the Maldives, the Seychelles, Chengdu, Dusseldorf, Tripoli and Nairobi in 2011.
Some 479,000 passengers were carried on Etihad"s flights to Abu Dhabi from London Heathrow last year, making this route the second busiest in the airline"s network after the service to Bangkok, which transported more than 500,000 travellers.
