Rosie Fuller, editor of Adventure Travel magazine, singled out Macedonia, Montenegro and Romania as countries that are set to welcome more visitors on trips of this kind in the coming year.

Commenting on the market in general, Ms Fuller said there are "loads" of exciting destinations emerging, including some Middle Eastern and central Asian nations that are not commonly associated with tourism.

"I"ve seen a particular interest in the "stans", with readers beginning to report back from treks to Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and the Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan," she commented.
