Some of Mexico"s most significant historical locations and attractions could receive a boost in profile as a result of a new tourism campaign.

Mundo Maya is a promotional initiative that links the Mexican states of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Yucatan and Tabasco.

These areas are home to six of the 27 Unesco World Heritage locations found in the North American country.

Among Mexico"s best-known historical attractions are its Mayan archaeological sites, which recently featured in a CNN story about tourism in the nation.

CNN"s World Treasures programme asked Jeff Morgan, executive director of the Global Heritage Fund, to compile a list of key Mayan destinations, with Chichen Itza in the Yucatan region and Palenque in Chiapas both featuring in the final rundown.

Mr Morgan also highlighted Tulum in Quintana Roo, a coastal location that he described as a "picturesque" spot offering plenty of opportunities for visitors to capture some unique photographs.
