To mark President Obama"s speech on a new strategy to boost tourism in the United States at Walt Disney World yesterday (19 January), the US Travel Association has released some facts and figures highlighting the importance of the industry.
The country"s travel sector supports some 14m jobs and attracted direct spending of $759bn (£492bn) by international and domestic visitors in 2010, according to the group.
Roger Dow, president and chief executive of the US Travel Association, noted that every 35 foreign visitors to the nation generate one job that cannot be outsourced.
He also stressed the importance of government strategies to boost the appeal of American destinations to overseas tourists in future.
"We look forward to working with the [Obama] administration to improve policies that would bring more international travellers to the US, as well as increase the facilitation of travellers within the US," said Mr Dow.
The president discussed new tourism initiatives during his speech at Walt Disney World with the aim of reducing red tape for foreign visitors.
