Abta, the travel industry association, has reassured people planning a holiday in Greece that the country is still a good destination to visit, despite recent protests over the economy and financial problems.

Sean Tipton, a spokesman for the group, said the demonstrations have been restricted to Athens and have had no effect on the Greek islands and other areas that are popular among holidaymakers.

He also pointed out that the country"s unemployment issues have left many local people unable to go out to restaurants and bars, resulting in lower prices.

"So it is bad news for the Greeks but is good news for foreign holidaymakers because the country is cheaper to travel to than it has been for a number of years," added Mr Tipton.

The Abta spokesman also stressed that visitors should not feel guilty about taking advantage of the country"s low prices, as they are doing their bit to help the economy by contributing to the tourism industry.
