Germany sets new record for overnight stays by foreigners by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The German National Tourist Office (GNTO) has announced that the country notched up 63.8m overnight stays by foreign visitors last year, beating the previous record set in 2010 by 6%.
Travellers from overseas spend a total of about €36.6bn (£30.3bn) on trips to Germany every year, with approximately 28% of this going on flights and 26% used to cover hotels and other forms of accommodation.
Last year also saw more than 330m overnight stays by Germans in the country, which has set itself a target of surpassing 400m nights spent by tourists of all nationalities in 2012.
Petra Hedorfer, chief executive of the GNTO, said the country had strengthened its position as one of Europe"s leading travel destinations in "striking fashion".
She added: "Recording growth of around 5%, Germany established itself in 2011 as the second most popular travel destination among Europeans after Spain, which grew by approximately 10%."
Popular cities to visit during a trip to the nation include Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf.
