The Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board has announced that the country welcomed more than 24.7m visitors last year and cited luxury branding efforts as a key factor in the strong performance.

Overall arrivals increased from 24,577,196 in 2010 to 24,714,324 last year, while receipts rose from RM56.5bn (£11.9bn) to RM58.3bn.

Malaysian tourism minister YB Dato" Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen revealed that the figures are in line with the nation"s long-term plan to welcome 36m visitors and generate income of RM168bn by 2020.

"The branding of Malaysia as a luxury destination and our efforts to attract high-yield tourists to Malaysia have been well-received and this has made a difference," she added.

Of the country"s top ten tourism source markets in 2011, the UK was the only one outside Asia and Australasia, with most visitors coming from Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, China and Brunei.
