Manchester airport is investing more than £1m in replacing its ageing trolley fleet this year.
From April, travellers catching flights to and from the base will be able to use trolleys that are lighter and easier to manoeuvre than their predecessors, with GPS technology meaning they can be positioned in the busiest areas.
Julie Armstrong, customer services director at Manchester airport, noted that the base has invested more than £100m since 2007 in major improvements such as terminal refurbishment and airfield upgrades.
"It"s also important to get the basics right, which is why we are also investing over £1m in new luggage trolleys," she added.
Passengers will have to pay £1 or €2 to use the trolleys, which will not be refundable.
Ms Armstrong admitted that the policy of not giving refunds will be unpopular but said it will ensure that only people using the trolleys pay for their provision.
Manchester was recently named the best airport in the UK at Travel Weekly"s 2012 Globe Awards, beating competition from London Heathrow and Gatwick.
