Mexico Sets New International Visitor Record
Mexico sets new international visitor record by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Mexico"s tourism industry set a new record last year, with 22.67m international travellers visiting the country.
The figure represents growth of 2% from 2010"s performance and a 0.2% increase on the previous high recorded in 2008.
Brits showed strong demand for flights to Mexico and accommodation in the North American country, with UK visitor numbers rising by 11.6% last year.
The nation also achieved double-digit growth in significant tourism source markets such as Brazil, Russia, Italy and Australia.
Rodolfo Lopez-Negrete, the Mexico Tourism Board"s chief operating officer, said the country is "overjoyed" to have broken its international visitor record.
"These figures clearly demonstrate that the bold diversification strategy we have implemented - promoting a broad tourism offering and targeting an expanded breed of global consumer - is succeeding," he added.
The tourism agency is expecting 2012 to be another record year, partly owing to a campaign celebrating the start of the new Mayan calendar and promoting trips to regions such as Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatan.
