Discussing some of the possible reasons for this trend, Mr Hall suggested that some older people have the time and the disposable income necessary to embark on adventurous trips and fulfill ambitions they have had for many years.

The Lonely Planet spokesman also commented on the destinations and regions that tend to prove popular among over-50s, highlighting North America, India, Australia and New Zealand in particular.
