Brits take record number of cruises in 2011 by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) has released figures showing that 2011 was a record year in terms of British demand for cruises, with some 1.7m UK consumers taking a holiday at sea.
Nearly 700,000 people who embarked on a cruise last year did so for the first time.
Value, service and the wide variety of destinations to choose from were identified as some of the most appealing aspects of taking a holiday of this kind.
The ongoing popularity of countries such as Spain, France and Italy meant the Mediterranean remained the top region for Brits going on cruises last year, with a 10% increase in passenger numbers year-on-year.
Northern Europe welcomed the highest number of sea voyagers from the UK, while the Atlantic islands - a group that comprises the Canaries and Madeira - achieved the highest annual growth rate of 19%.
The PSA figures also showed that a record 753,000 travellers began cruises from a British port in 2011.
William Gibbons, director of the association, said: "The increased costs of fly-cruise holidays have led to more people joining their cruise at one of the UK"s 50 ports.
"The sheer diversity of the cruise market means there is a holiday for everyone."
