Online bookings dominate travel trade in 2011 by Cheap Flights Booker UK
A new report from industry analyst IPK International has highlighted the growing importance of the internet to the travel sector, with more than half (55%) of all bookings made online in 2011.
The figure represents an increase of 15% from the previous year.
Travel agents are becoming increasingly reliant on their websites, according to the research, with nearly half (49%) of these companies" bookings taken online in 2011.
Despite the growing importance of the smartphone for travellers, just 2% of web reservations were made on the devices last year, with the majority of consumers using PCs, laptops or netbooks.
IPK International chief executive Rolf Freitag said: "Mobile booking has been pushed very much by the smartphone business, but it is only 2%.
"It will increase, but it is not going to be the majority of bookings."
Mr Freitag also revealed that one in four of the European travel industry"s smartphone transactions were made in the UK in 2011.
