Tourists Vital For Economic And Social Progress
Tourists "vital" for economic and social progress by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The 1bn people expected to travel internationally this year will prove a "vital force" for economic growth and social welfare, according to the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
Speaking at the ITB trade show in Berlin, Taleb Rifai, the organisation"s secretary-general, noted that one seventh of the world"s population will have crossed borders around the world as tourists by the end of 2012.
He described this as an "extraordinary number" that will create more jobs, higher income possibilities and opportunities for development in destinations across the globe.
Mr Rifai also stressed that tourism growth must be responsible and said the industry has the potential to be "one of the most promising sectors for achieving a more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable future".
People interested in responsible travel were encouraged to adopt practices such as buying produce from the area they are staying in, hiring local guides and demanding sustainable practices from hotels and tour operators.
