BA to celebrate 85 years of inflight meal service by Cheap Flights Booker UK
British Airways (BA) will this year mark the 85th anniversary of its inflight meal service, which was introduced in 1927 on the airline"s predecessor Imperial Airways.
The Silverwing culinary offering was debuted on a route from London to Paris, with food and drink provided by a male steward in a white tunic who served just ten passengers on the first flight.
Four servings of whisky and a dozen bottles of beer were among the items stocked onboard, along with a packet of sandwiches or biscuits and one or two flasks of hot water for making coffee and tea.
Today, BA"s cabin crew serve approximately 100,000 meals a day to passengers and are taught skills such as distinguishing between different wines and recreating a five-star turndown service.
Bill Francis, the airline"s head of inflight offerings, said: "We"ve developed the service to our customers and even as we"ve grown from small propeller aircraft to 747s, we"ve managed to maintain the magic that makes flying special."
