For the first time ever, Bracken Cave near New Braunfels, which is about 72km south-west of Austin, is opening for public tours.

The cave hosts one of the largest concentrations of mammals on the planet, with millions of Mexican free-tailed bats living there from April to October.

During this summer"s tours, guests will have the chance to see the spectacular sight of the animals emerging at dusk to embark on their nightly insect hunt.

There will also be opportunities to learn more about bats and their importance as part of Earth"s ecosystem.

Nina Fascione, executive director of BCI, the Austin-based group which owns and manages Bracken Cave, said these mammals and their habitats have been threatened for centuries by myths, misinformation and "needless fears".

She added: "Our goal in opening tours to the public is to teach more people the truth about bats and the critical need for conservation efforts."
