Heathrow passes 70m passenger milestone by Cheap Flights Booker UK

London Heathrow saw some 5.7m people pass through its terminals in March, meaning the airport handled more than 70m passengers over a 12-month period for the first time in its history.

Last month"s traffic marked an increase of nearly 7% on March 2011, partly as a result of this year"s early Easter.

The efficiency with which airlines at Heathrow filled their planes also improved, with load factors increasing by 4.2 percentage points to 73.4% during the month.

Airport operator BAA revealed that some 8.6m people travelled through its six UK bases in March 2012, an increase of 4% year-on-year.

Commenting on the figures, BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said: "Reaching 70m passengers at Heathrow is a major milestone, demonstrating the resilience of the airport in an otherwise challenging economic environment."

Flights to Brazil were a particularly popular option from the London hub last month, with the number of people flying to the South American nation rising 62.3% year-on-year.
