Maldives targets 1m visitors in 2012 by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation has revealed that the Indian Ocean nation is hoping to attract a record 1m visitors in 2012.
Some 931,000 people travelled to the isles that form the Maldives last year, marking a 17.6% increase from 2010.
Early indications suggest that there was a 3.3% rise in visitor numbers during the first quarter of 2012 despite political disputes in the country, meaning the industry is on course to meet the target of 1m arrivals by the end of the year.
The Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation also pointed out that the UN World Tourism Organisation has predicted growth of up to 6% in international travel to Asia in 2012.
Luxury holidays are a particularly popular option in the island nation, owing to its crystal clear waters and palm-fringed, white-sand beaches.
Popular activities on offer to visitors include scuba diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing and touring local islands and fishing villages.
