"Alentejo"s gastronomy is very strongly linked with the region"s history and traditions, and can be the basis for very interesting … holidays," added Mr Silva.

Visitors can learn about traditional produce associated with this part of Portugal, including local black pig and desserts based on old recipes.

Another destination that could be of interest to travellers this year is the northern city of Guimaraes, which will be hosting a number of special events in its role as a European Capital of Culture.
