Latvia"s capital topped the company"s City Costs Barometer for the second year running based on the price of commodities such as meals, drinks and accommodation.

Budapest was ranked second, with a 19.5% year-on-year increase in the value of sterling making the Hungarian city an affordable option for Brits in 2012.

Eastern European destinations performed well in the study, with Tallinn and Prague also making it into the top five.

Andrew Brown, head of Post Office Travel Money, said spending costs will be lower for Britons visiting several cities on the continent this year following a rise in the value of the pound against some currencies.

"That is why we recommend keeping a close eye on exchange rates and matching these with individual city costs before choosing which capital to visit," he added.
