Spains Smurf Village Sees Tourism Boom
Spain"s "Smurf village" sees tourism boom by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Travellers visiting southern Spain have been flocking to a village that was painted blue for the Smurfs 3D movie.
Juzcar in Andalucia, a small town that is home to just 200 people, has welcomed some 125,000 tourists since it was given its distinctive new look last summer.
Local mayor David Fernandez Tirado told Malaga newspaper Sur that the number of visits to Juzcar is showing no signs of going down.
"Apart from colder, wintry days, it"s been quite the opposite - it"s continuing to spark a lot of interest," he commented.
Residents of the village had the opportunity to vote for the facades of their houses to be returned to their normal colour in December last year, but chose to keep them blue after realising the town"s potential as a tourist attraction.
The properties were previously painted all white, typical of the "pueblos blancos", or "white towns", found in the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga in southern Spain.
