Travellers Urged Not To Rely Solely On EHIC
Travellers urged not to rely solely on EHIC by Cheap Flights Booker UK
There is a great deal of confusion among British consumers about the benefits provided by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), according to new research.
A survey commissioned by Gocompare.com found that more than half (57%) of Britons incorrectly think the EHIC entitles them to free emergency medical care anywhere in Europe.
Only 18% of respondents said they know which countries provide free care for holders of the card, while 14% said they had never even heard of the service.
The comparison website pointed out that the EHIC provides access to the same level of state healthcare available to nationals of countries in the European Economic Area, which includes all 27 EU members plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
However, state provisions vary from country to country and few EU nations cover the full cost of medical treatment like the NHS.
Gocompare.com said an EHIC is a "must have" for travellers heading to Europe but stressed that it does not guarantee free healthcare.
"It certainly won"t be any help if you need medical repatriation to the UK, the costs of which can run into thousands of pounds," warned Jeremy Cryer, the website"s head of travel insurance.
