Abta: Outbound travellers make major contribution to UK economy by Cheap Flights Booker UK
British travellers heading overseas make a highly important contribution to the UK economy, according to Abta.
The industry association unveiled new research by the Centre of Economics and Business Research showing that holidaymakers spend an average of £532 per person before they have even left the country.
A total of £31.2bn is spent on holiday products, services and planning every year, nearly as much as the £31.6bn people pay out during their trips, according to the report.
Buying new items for the holiday wardrobe was found to be one of the largest areas of expenditure at £1.83bn per year, followed by duty-free goods (£1.77bn).
Victoria Bacon, Abta"s head of communications, said making preparations, searching for clothes and browsing through duty-free stores is a big part of the excitement of going away for many people.
"Add to this all of the jobs that are supported in travel agents, at airports and in shops and it is clear that the outbound travel sector makes a very important contribution to the UK economy," she added.
The industry directly employs nearly 625,000 people and also supports a further 1.26m jobs in the wider economy.
