Efficiency Trial To Continue At London Heathrow
Efficiency trial to continue at London Heathrow by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The Department of Transport has announced plans to launch the second phase of a trial that could provide a number of benefits for travellers at London Heathrow, including shorter delays and fewer late-running flights.
Due to get underway on 1 July this year, the initiative will continue until the end of March 2013.
The first phase of the trial ran from November last year to the end of February 2012 and tested a number of ways of improving Heathrow"s resilience to disruption.
One of the measures introduced was using both of the airport"s runways for arrivals or both for departures, rather than utilising one exclusively for arrivals and the other for departures.
Results suggested improvements in punctuality, reduced emissions and less need for planes to have to taxi across runways.
The second phase of the trial has been launched to provide more detailed analysis and concrete conclusions.
Commenting on the project, airport operator BAA"s airside director Tim Hardy said: "We need to look at ways to strengthen resilience, which will bring benefits to the local community through fewer late-running flights, to passengers by providing a more punctual service and to the environment by reducing aircraft stacking and emissions."
