Julie Hay, head of British Airways American Express Credit Cards, said prices are falling in both these destinations as part of a drive to attract more visitors in 2012.

Both countries have recently experienced challenges to their tourism industries, with economic difficulties and political disputes having an effect on visitor numbers.

"Egypt and Greece are … set to attract many holidaymakers as both seek to boost tourism this year by offering excellent deals," said Ms Hay.

The spokeswoman also said destinations where travellers can see the Northern Lights, such as Iceland, Finland and Canada, are expected to prove popular in 2012.

According to recent research by American Express, the majority of Britons are refusing to sacrifice their holidays this year and will spend a collective total of £36bn on trips to destinations all over the world.
