Brazil moves up global events ranking by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Brazil has risen from ninth to seventh place on the International Congress and Convention Association"s (ICCA) ranking of the world"s leading countries in terms of hosting major events.
The country has overtaken Japan and China in the list and is the only South American nation in the top ten.
In 2011, 304 international events were held in Brazil, marking a 10% increase from the 275 hosted in the previous year.
The figure has risen by 390% since 2003, when national tourist board Embratur took on the responsibility of promoting the country abroad.
Rio de Janeiro was Brazil"s top city for holding events last year, ahead of Sao Paulo, Salvador, Brasilia and Florianopolis.
Embratur chairman Flavio Dino said the nation is currently experiencing an exciting time, largely thanks to the prospect of the 2014 Fifa World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.
He added: "Destinations that have not yet had much global recognition will find themselves able to compete as hosts on the international stage."
