Cairo "to be Africa"s most visited destination city in 2012" by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Cairo will be the most visited "destination city" in Africa this year, according to the latest MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.

The global payments and technology company predicted that 3.3m visitors will flock to Cairo throughout 2012, putting the Egyptian capital ahead of other major African locations such as second-placed Johannesburg (2.5m) and Casablanca (2.1m) in third.

While Johannesburg was beaten by Cairo in the visitor number stakes, the South African city topped the list for spending.

MasterCard claimed visitors will spend $3.3bn (£2.1bn) during their time in Johannesburg, representing an increase of 8.1% on the figure recorded in 2011.

Dries Zietsman, country manager of MasterCard Worldwide in South Africa, said the report is "used as a barometer for understanding the global economy and the dynamic flow of commerce across the world".

Across the world as a whole, London was named the top city for international visitors, while several other European destinations - including Paris, Madrid, Frankfurt and Rome - made the top 20.
